Trilby Tour Berkshire & South Central Champion 2010: Guy Dawson

Winning was above and beyond all my expectations of the day.

Background
Age: 29
Handicap: 3
Home club: Gerrards Cross
Occupation: Builder
History: First time in the TT

Congratulations Guy! How does it feel to be Trilby Tour Berkshire Champion?
Winning the Berkshire Championship has been above and beyond all my expectations of the day. My aim was just to qualify for the finals - everything else including the generous prizes have been a huge bonus. (One year's membership at Bearwood Lakes and a trip to William Hunt Savile Row for an exclusive suit.)

What made you enter?
I had a couple of friends who played in it last year and I saw it on Sky so thought I would give it a shot.

In life you come across certain situations and you learn to deal with it there and then

How do you feel you played?
I certainly wouldn't say I played my best, but it would have been one of my best performances in scrambling and getting the ball down the hole at the end of the day.

Tell us about a little bit about yourself
I've been playing golf since I was 13. As a kid I used to play three times a week and then I joined a club. My other main sport is cricket - we call ourselves the Phoenix Old Boys and play at the Farnham Royal, in Berkshire. I used to play primarily team sports but injuries to my leg meant I had to turn to individual sports like golf. What I love about golf is the challenge. It's the hardest game to perfect as you'll never get the same circumstance or surroundings and requires a lot of patience.

I've very level headed and easy going, but inside I'm very competitive

Describe yourself in a sentence
I've very level headed and easy going, but inside I'm very competitive.

What are your thoughts on the final?
I'm really looking forward to it! My original aim was just to get to the final. Now that I've done that anything extra would be a bonus on top.

How did you cope on the day?
Well, the cameras didn't affect me at all, I just blanked them out completely and ignored them. I don't mind playing in front of crowds - I never have done. Some people get nervous but I've never really found that all. In life you come across certain situations and you learn to deal with it there and then.

There's nothing you can majorly change so you just have to handle it. We all knew what we were getting ourselves in for; we knew that William Hunt was going to throw jokes and gestures at you after you watch it on TV and we all knew we were going to be filmed. You just hope you don't embarrass yourself when you get on!

I try not to beat myself up over things as I realise there's always someone worse off

What's your motto in life?
I try not to beat myself up over things as I realise there's always someone worse off.

Any last words?
I'd like to say a big thank you to William Hunt and the organisers at Bearwood for staging such a brilliant day. That's not just from me but all the players and caddies. You couldn't have felt anymore special - it really has been unique.
